Formerly managing director of the members' club and FC Bayern Sport Werbe GmbH, Karl Hopfner joined Bayern in 1983 and was elected to succeed Uli Hoeneß as president at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 2 May 2014. Born on 28 August 1952, Hopfner is a graduate in business economics and held a senior position in an industrial corporation. As FC Bayern Munich AG deputy chairman and executive board member until the end of 2012, he was responsible for the club's financial affairs and accounting, ticket distribution systems, legal and human resource sections, mail-order and retail businesses. He also represented the company in FC Bayern Munich AG's social and community projects.
Hopfner has been a member of the UEFA committee for club tournaments since 2009, and a member of the board of the DFL and the DFB since 2010. Karl Hopfner, in his tenure as executive director, member of the board, and executive board deputy chairman, can look back on successes such as the Intercontinental Cup (2001), the Champions League (2001), the UEFA Cup (1996), 15 German championships, nine DFB Cups and nine German League Cups or Supercups. On 15 November 2012, Hopfner was elected senior vice-president of the FC Bayern Munich members’ club, and is thus also a member of the FC Bayern Munich AG Supervisory Board.
