Giant-killers Wuppertal lie in wait for Bayern

Bayern will travel to face third division Wuppertaler SV in the DFB Cup Round of 16, after German women’s international Renate Lingor performed the draw live on Thursday evening TV. Munich scraped past another third-tier club, Wacker Burghausen, in the first round.

“Obviously, we’ll be favourites in Wuppertal,” Ottmar Hitzfeld said in a first reaction to the draw, “but we’ve not forgotten Burghausen. We’re well aware of what lower division teams are capable of in front of a full house in their biggest game of the season.“

Wuppertal’s illustrious victims

Wuppertal have already claimed two notable scalps in this term’s competition, defeating second division Erzgebirge Aue 4-3 on penalties in the first round, before knocking out the Bundesliga’s eighth-placed club Hertha BSC Berlin 2-0 in midweek. “We’ll have to be on our guard and play with enormous concentration, but it should be within our grasp,” Hitzfeld continued, “our aim is to make the final in Berlin, and we don’t intend Wuppertaler SV to stop us.“

Wuppertal coach Wolfgang Jerat confessed he had been hoping for a local derby against Schalke 04, but was still delighted at the prospect of facing Bayern. It would be “more difficult“ to survive against the 13-times winners, but the club was looking forward to the match “immensely. Taking on Bayern Munich in a competitive match is a fantastic challenge for Wuppertal and for us.“

Memories of 2004

Bayern last visited Wuppertal in January 2004. In a closely-fought friendly match, a 25,300 crowd at the Zoo stadium saw Munich defeat the former Bundesliga outfit 5-3. The Round of 16 tie between the side lying second in the third division north and the Bundesliga leaders will be played on 29 or 30 January 2008.
