Van Bommel ordered to give written account

Mark van Bommel faces the prospect of a longer ban than the compulsory single match following his sending off for two bookable offences against Hamburg on Sunday. An analysis of TV footage of the incident, just before the Dutch midfielder received a second yellow card for ironically applauding referee Lutz Wagner, shows the player making an obscene gesture, apparently in the direction of the match official. Wagner did not see nor punish the gesture, thus prompting the disciplinary committee to intervene.

The panel has now ordered the Bayern star to deliver a written statement regarding the incident. Van Bommel has already said the gesture was an expression of frustration towards himself. The committee will assess the situation and decide on any further action after receiving the player’s account.
