Reaction to Energie Cottbus v Bayern

Hitzfeld: We lacked bite and concentration

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was in no mood to mince words after his side’s 2-0 defeat to bottom club Energie Cottbus: “It was a black day for us. Right from the start, we shirked our tackles, gave them too much space, and made no end of mistakes in defence.“ The General castigated his men for lack of concentration: “It’s highly possible one or two of my players were deceived by all the talk of the title race being over.“

Reaction to Energie Cottbus v Bayern:

Ottmar Hitzfeld: “It was a black day for us. Right from the start, we shirked our tackles, gave them too much space, and made no end of mistakes in defence. Cottbus had all the time in the world to play their passes and counter-attack at speed. It’s highly possible one or two of my players were deceived by all the talk of the title race being over, and had started dreaming we’d won the championship already. We lacked concentration and thought we could take it easy, just like against Anderlecht, which basically should have been enough of a warning. We lost every single challenge in the first ten minutes, and from then on, I knew it was going to be difficult for us.“

Daniel van Buyten: “We didn’t show up today. We weren’t aggressive enough, our passing was pedestrian, and we couldn’t find any gaps. Cottbus simply sat back and waited to hit us on the break. The first half was the worst we’ve played all season. Anyone thinking we’ve already won the league is making a huge mistake. Everyone wants to beat Bayern, so it’s a mistake to go out there thinking: maybe it’ll be easy today. We didn’t invest enough in the game today. Cottbus were much more alert, but we let our heads hang. We didn’t do enough to take anything from the game.“

Bojan Prašnikar (Cottbus coach): “You always have to think positive. We’re thinking positively, and we’ll work even harder now right to the end of the league programme.“

Ervin Skela (Cottbus): “We got stuck in, we played some good attacking passes, and we deserved the 2-0 lead at the break. We always knew we’d come under pressure at the end against a team like Bayern.“
