Bayern were grateful enough for Saturday’s point in Nürnberg. “We had a bad day,“ Ottmar Hitzfeld reacted after a 1-1 draw in the all-Bavaria derby. The Bayern coach reckoned his players were feeling the effects of representing their countries last Wednesday. “It was obvious we were incredibly weary from the midweek internationals, which is why we didn’t pass well and had trouble playing decent football,“ the General argued.
Reaction to 1. FC Nürnberg v Bayern:
Ottmar Hitzfeld: “We had a bad day. Our internationals were totally drained when they came back and they never got going today. Ribéry was one of the most tired players on the pitch. It was obvious we were incredibly weary from the midweek internationals, which is why we didn’t pass well and had trouble playing decent football. We dozed off for the opening goal. I was angry at half-time, because players can’t be putting in one or two kilometres more for their countries than for us. That’s not on, and it’s something we’ll be having a frank talk about.“
Franz Beckenbauer: “It’s never easy in Nuremberg. It’s a derby, and we lost here 3-0 a year ago, so we’ve improved compared to that. The second half was better to watch than the first. The team lost control after the first 10 or 15 minutes. Nürnberg were good and determined, and attacked Bayern early, so it was always going to be tough. We stood too far off our men for their goal. The team was a different proposition in the second half and the subs played their part in making sure we at least didn’t lose.“
Lukas Podolski: “It was as tough as we expected, but that’s a derby for you. The draw was the right result. We have to keep concentrating now, there aren’t many games to go and we want to win three trophies.“
Thomas von Heesen (FCN coach): “We’ve seen everything you could expect from our team in the current situation. Unfortunately, we’ve not been rewarded at the end of the day, because we dozed off for an instant. But the way we showed belief and the courage to attack Bayern says we’re heading in the right direction. You can see the team’s not broken.“
Zvjezdan Misimovic (FCN): “We might have taken more from today’s game. We led for a long time, Jan Koller almost made it 2-0 and then they go and equalise after 80 minutes. We have to live with it, we’ve not managed to protect the 1-0 lead until the end. It was a very different performance compared to previous matches. We were on fire, we tackled hard and fought our way into the match. That’s how it has to be when you’re at home.“
