Another highlight of the German close season was announced this week on the news that the Supercup event is to be revived. Two weeks ahead of the new Bundesliga season, champions and DFB Cup winners Bayern will meet Cup finalists Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park, with kick-off set for 8.30 pm on 23 July 2008.

“As the League Cup cannot be staged this season due to scheduling problems, we’ve reactivated the Supercup,” explained Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “We’re delighted to be joining forces with Borussia Dortmund in reviving this attractive match.”

Three wins each for FCB and BVB

“This classic clash will be a highlight of pre-season for fans of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, and the first duel between new coaches Jürgen Klopp and Jürgen Klinsmann,” added BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke.

The Supercup, contested by the previous season’s champions and the DFB Cup winners, was staged on an official basis from 1987 to 1996. Both Bayern and Borussia Dortmund are three-time winners of the trophy.
