Despite a hamstring injury sustained in training with Turkey last Friday, Hamit Altintop still has a good chance of appearing at Euro 2008 when the continental showdown opens next Saturday. The FCB wide player duly travelled with the Turkey squad to their tournament base at Geneva in Switzerland on Sunday.
Altintop collected the adductor injury at the Turks’ pre-tournament training camp in the town of Marienfeld in Westphalia, and reported to Bayern chief medic Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt for treatment on Saturday. The 25-year-old remains a doubtful starter for Turkey’s opening Euro 2008 fixture against Portugal next Saturday.
Speaking before the squad’s departure from Marienfeld on Sunday, Altintop himself was in upbeat spirits. “It’s not too bad. I’ll be fit by Saturday,“ declared the midfielder, who made his international comeback in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Uruguay last week after two months out with a fractured metatarsal. The player had to be substituted with a muscle strain during Turkey’s 2-0 warm-up win over Finland in Duisburg last Thursday.
