Serial French champions Olympique Lyon have warmed up in the best possible way for Tuesday’s Champions League visit to Bayern. Making light of the absence of injured Brazilian playmaker Juninho and suspended forward Sidney Govou, the Ligue 1 title holders defeated AS Nancy 2-1 at home on Saturday evening, moving onto 19 points from seven matches and stretching their lead in the standings to a daunting five points.
Star striker Karim Benzema (31) and Brazilian ace Fred (35) scored for Lyon, Pascal Bérenguer pulling one back for Nancy (37). “We’re ready for Bayern,“ declared Fred. “We’re still undefeated this season and we want to keep it that way for as long as possible,“ added Benzema.
On Matchday 1 in Champions League Group F, Lyon came from two goals down to snatch a late 2-2 draw at home to Fiorentina. Bayern won 1-0 away to Steaua Bucharest courtesy of a Daniel van Buyten header.
In Munich, Lyon are almost certain to be without free-kick specialist Juninho, who has a groin strain. However, coach Claude Puel said the 20-year-old Benzema would be fit to play, despite the potent hitman coming off after an hour of the Nancy clash with a foot injury. “He took a knock on the right ankle, but I don’t think we need worry about his fitness to face Bayern,“ commented Puel.
