Bayern seemed certain of victory at 3-1 up against VfL Bochum with less than ten minutes to play, but the visitors shocked the champions with a late double strike to make off with a point, much to coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s displeasure: “When you’re 3-1 up, and you’ve had the chances to score at least two goals more, you basically can’t be letting a game like that slip. It’s made me very angry."
Reaction to Bayern v VfL Bochum:
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “We were very complacent and settled for the result, that’s what we unfortunately have to admit. It hurts a lot, as the two points would have done us a great deal of good. We’ve not made up any ground in the table, whereas a victory would have put us fourth or fifth, so it’s a poor result."
Uli Hoeneß: “No-one can explain this result at the moment. We totally controlled the game - at 3-1 there wasn’t the slightest suggestion we might concede another goal, especially as we had the chances to make it four or five."
Jürgen Klinsmann: “From our point of view, our last three results in the Bundesliga are completely unsatisfactory. When you’re 3-1 up, and you’ve had the chances to score at least two goals more, you basically can’t be letting a game like that slip. It’s made me very angry. The team thought they were home and dry. The points were basically in the bag. Even after they made it 3-2, we should have seen it through to the end and not kept on going for goal. Obviously, it hurts to hear the fans voice their anger, but I do understand where they’re coming from. Our results in the Bundesliga are absolutely not what we wanted."
Marcel Koller (Bochum coach): “It’s unbelievable how much effort we have to put in just to score three goals. But I think we played well. We hit the post when we were 2-1 down and might have equalised at that point. The way my team fought back was simply fantastic."
Christoph Dabrowski (Bochum goalscorer): “It was an amazing game. We showed Bayern very little respect right from the start, we tried to attack and yet we still kept it tight. Unfortunately we gave away some silly goals. We never gave up at any time, which was obvious in the closing stages. At the end of the day, we’re obviously overjoyed we’ve managed to haul ourselves back into it.“
