Lucio and Demichelis return to winning ways

Five-time world champions Brazil and fellow South American giants Argentina bounced back from recent unconvincing streaks in 2010 World Cup qualifying with important victories in the first of back-to-back eliminators this week, Bayern stars Lucio and Martin Demichelis both covering the full distance for their respective countries.

The Selecao, once again captained by Lucio, silenced a barrage of criticism following a goalless draw at home to Bolivia last time out by travelling to Venezuela and running up a comfortable 4-0 victory.

A 50,000 crowd at the Pueblo Nuevo stadium in San Cristobal saw Kaká (6), Robinho (10, 66) and Adriano (19) hit the target for the Brazilians, although there was a slight concern for Bayern in that several top players including Lucio succumbed to vomiting before and after the match, prompting an official Brazilian football federation (CBF) statement in which coach Carlos Dunga complained about his players’ pre-match treatment.
