After unnecessarily dropping two points in last week’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayern are now determined to resume their pursuit of the teams above them in the Bundesliga table by recapturing the form which previously brought five league wins on the trot. “In the four remaining games before the winter break, it’s vital we don’t hand our rivals any more “gifts” like we did in Gladbach,” urged chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge ahead on Saturday’s home meeting with struggling Energie Cottbus (Live in English from 3.15 pm CET on FCB.tv Web Radio).
Bayern currently lie three points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and second-placed TSG Hoffenheim. The top two face tricky away tasks this weekend, Bayer in Bielefeld and Hoffenheim against fellow promoted club FC Köln, so victory for the champions against Cottbus could well narrow the gap at the top. “We want to catch up a few points before the winter break. Our goal is still to be top at Christmas,” declared Bayern boss Jürgen Klinsmann.
Current form: Bayern in third meet bottom club Energie, so there is no doubt who starts as favourites. Anything less than a clear-cut victory will rate as a disappointment for Jürgen Klinsmann and his men, and would represent a setback in the champions’ quest to recover top spot in the standings. By contrast, Cottbus are under no pressure whatsoever, especially as they beat Karlsruhe last week to double their total of victories this term. “A lot of the mental pressure’s come off,” commented skipper Timo Rost after the morale-boosting win. However, Bayern know they must in no circumstances underestimate the men from Cottbus, for although the Bavarians have won all five previous meetings in Munich, FCB have lost twice in Cottbus, most recently a 2-0 defeat on 15 March this year.
