Toni and Van Buyten out

Bayern continue league pursuit in Bremen

Bayern travel to face Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Sunday with surging confidence, but without a clutch of key players. Four days after a gala 5-0 demolition of Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, the champions are aiming to make up lost ground in the league and at least reduce the gap between themselves and the front-runners. However, injury and illness have deprived Jürgen Klinsmann of one or two first-choice stars for the trip to the northern club.

Goal-getter Luca Toni was forced to break off Saturday’s final pre-match training session with a reaction to an Achilles injury. The Italian World Cup winner is definitely out of the clash at the Weser stadium, as is Daniel van Buyten, who was unable to train with the flu. A question-mark hangs over Philipp Lahm, as the Germany international also came down with flu symptoms at the weekend. On the plus side, Massimo Oddo has been unexpectedly declared fit. The Italian was struggling with an ankle injury sustained in Lisbon, but now seems set to feature against Werder.
