“It’s been one of those fantastic days.” No-one could have put it better than Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, speaking late on Wednesday at the midnight banquet customarily held after an away fixture in Europe. With Lisbon’s sunny 22 degrees, palm trees and the ocean providing an agreeable setting, Bayern’s 5-0 triumph over Sporting Clube at the Estádio José Alvalade in the evening was a treat to behold.
Munich’s biggest-ever away win in the Champions League has made qualifying for the last eight in the return two weeks from now little more than a formality. Even more importantly, the players rebounded in impressive style from back-to-back Bundesliga defeats.
“Our team has given the perfect answer to all the talk of a crisis,” commented Rummenigge, thrilled by “an unbelievable match with a terrific result.” Uli Hoeneß was equally unstinting in his praise: “The players were offered the chance to pull themselves together – and they’ve taken it to the full.”
