Bayern should be able to call on Italy marksman Luca Toni for Wednesday evening's Champions League trip to Sporting Lisbon. The man who finished top of the Bundesliga scoring charts last season was again unable to train with the senior squad on Sunday morning, but the club medical unit is pleased with the player's progress in recent days, and he will definitely fly to Portugal with the Bayern party on Tuesday.
"I'm confident," coach Jürgen Klinsmann told FCB.tv on Sunday. Toni was forced to watch Saturday's 2-1 home defeat against Köln from the Allianz Arena stands (pictured) after failing to recover from an inflamed Achilles tendon, and spent Sunday on "a very demanding fitness session," Klinsmann reported.
"We clearly missed his physical presence. Luca keeps two defenders busy, which gives Miro (Klose) much more room to manoeuvre," Klinsmann said. "I hope he's fit to face Sporting," declared chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, "He's exactly the kind of player we need during a phase like this."
Should Toni play in the Portuguese capital, he will take his place in a line-up also including Brazilian centre-half Lucio. "We rested Lucio against Köln, because we wanted him fresh for midweek," reported Klinsmann, who may also make one or two further positional changes.
