Klinsmann: It looks promising for Lukas

Lukas Podolski last appeared for Bayern in a Champions League clash away to Fiorentina on 5 November 2008. The Germany international has been plagued by illness and injury since then, missing almost all of the club’s mid-season training programme.

However, with the kind of ironic twist football specialises in, Podolski is finally set for a comeback next Saturday against his former club FC Köln, where he is due to return this summer. “If Lukas continues to train as well as he has done in recent days, he has a really good chance of being part of it at last against Köln,“ FCB coach Jürgen Klinsmann announced on Monday.

Podolski, who will end a three-season stay in Munich and rejoin his home town club in July, resumed the Bayern squad training programme around two weeks ago. He suffered persistent back problems in the late autumn, before a heavy bout of flu and gastroenteritis caused him to miss the bulk of the winter preparation phase. Poldi has scored three goals in eleven Bundesliga appearances so far this term.

“Once he’s back in the squad, everyone here at Bayern wants his last few months with us to be positive, so he returns to Köln with a medal or two,“ Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told in an exclusive interview on Monday. “We’d like to bid Lukas the friendliest of farewells in the summer,“ the FCB chairman confirmed.
