Forty-eight hours prior to Bayern’s DFB Cup quarter-final tie away to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Luca Toni and Philipp Lahm are both rated doubtful for the clash at the LTU Arena in Dusseldorf. The pair missed the Bundesliga fixture in Bremen on Sunday, and neither resumed training the following day.
Germany full-back Lahm paid the briefest of visits to the Säbener Strasse on Monday to be treated for flu. Toni continues to struggle with an Achilles injury and also reported to the medical unit for therapy.
Van Buyten set to return
There was better news of Daniel van Buyten. The defender, absent from the squad in Bremen with the flu, completed a gentle workout on Monday, and has not been ruled out of the Leverkusen clash. “I’ll be back on the squad programme tomorrow,” he informed fcbayern.de, “then we’ll see if I’m fit enough to play.”
Leverkusen boss Bruno Labbadia will definitely be unable to name a full-strength line-up on Wednesday after defender Manuel Friedrich was forced to undergo knee surgery. “He’s played very well so far this term, and was first-choice at centre-half. It’s a big loss,” Labbadia said.
Kroos for Leverkusen?
Seasoned midfielder Thomas Zdebel (knee ligaments) is also out of the heavyweight cup clash. However, Toni Kroos could be named among the subs in midweek, and may make a second competitive appearance for Bayer since joining on loan from Bayern in January.
