Wary Bayern leaving nothing to chance

The opposition and the competition are different, but Bayern are more than well acquainted with the situation: almost exactly a year ago, the German champions took a 5-0 lead from the first leg of a Round of 16 tie into the return on home turf. That was in the UEFA Cup against RSC Anderlecht. The game in Munich ended in a 2-1 defeat, and although that had no bearing at all on the outcome of the tie, the Bavarians are keen to avoid a repeat this time round.

“We can’t allow that to happen,” Jürgen Klinsmann commented ahead of the Champions League first knockout round, second leg meeting with Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday evening (Live in English from 8.30 pm on Web Radio) at the Allianz Arena. Keeper Michael Rensing issued a stern warning against “any kind of larking about. If we were to let in a couple of quick goals, it could possibly still get dangerous.”
