Bayern scrapped and fought their way to a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart in the last match of the season, sealing second place in the table and a berth in the Champions League. Understandably, relief was the dominant emotion in the Bayern camp afterwards - although not without a twinge of regret, as a little more consistency and better results at home could have seen FCB retain the shield.
Reaction to Bayern v Stuttgart
Uli Hoeneß: “Given the options open to us over the last few weeks, it’s basically ended pretty well. We’ve finished second and qualified for the Champions League. If you’re as commanding as Wolfsburg have been in the last few weeks of the season, you deserve to win the league. Wolfsburg are worthy champions. Jupp Heynckes has taken four wins and a draw from his five games in charge, so I think installing him was the right decision in the circumstances. I don’t think we need be ashamed about this season. We made the Champions League quarter-finals and we’re in the Champions League next season, so it’s not as bad as some people are making out.“
