The casual observer might have thought it was the same old story. After Bayern’s 2-1 last-day victory at home to VfB Stuttgart, sealing Munich’s place in next term’s Champions League, the fans, players and officials joined in a mutual celebration. However, the championship shield and the confetti were missing, as the Bundesliga title party was just getting underway in Wolfsburg at the same time.
“Wolfsburg totally deserve it. No complaints, no quibbles, we simply have to congratulate them,” said general manager Uli Hoeneß, grateful for “a satisfactory conclusion” to a turbulent season, “with a lot of highs and lows,” as Bastian Schweinsteiger reflected. “At the end of the day, we can pleased enough. We could have finished fourth,” continued Hoeneß. “We’ve come away with just a slap on the wrist.”
