Van Gaal still in 'observation phase'

Shortly after 8 pm on Sunday, the Hamburg players were lined up on the pitch at the Schalke Arena for the team photo marking their comfortable 3-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart in the final of the T-Home Cup 2009, a first – albeit not especially significant - trophy for newly-arrived HSV boss Bruno Labbadia.

Not much later, the Bayern squad was back at the summer training camp in Donaueschingen. Directly after a 2-1 victory over Schalke in the afternoon's third-place play-off, Louis van Gaal and his men hastened to Essen-Mühlheim airport for the flight to the Black Forest and the Öschberghof hotel, where FCB are staying until Thursday. Friendlies away to FC Köln on Friday and a McFit XI on Saturday then see the Bavarians back in the west of the country.

Bayern missed out on winning the T-Home Cup after falling 1-0 to eventual winners HSV on the first day, but Van Gaal will have gleaned "a few important lessons for the work he'll do from now on," manager Uli Hoeneß speculated.
