Van Gaal takes the Bayern helm

Louis van Gaal’s first training session as Bayern coach lasted just over 90 minutes. The sun beat down as more than 2,000 spectators intently followed events on the practice ground, picking out the recently-hired boss and seven new faces among the squad. The only players missing were Confed Cup participants Lucio and Luca Toni, and Bastian Schweinsteiger, who is recovering from surgery. watched the workout.

Van Gaal’s first session at FCB:

9.52 am: Assistant coaches Hermann Gerland and Andries Jonker emerge onto the practice ground and mark out the pitch with cones. They return to the dressing room within a couple of minutes.

9.55 am: The board of directors - Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Uli Hoeneß and Karl Hopfner – and new director of sport Christian Nerlinger make their way to the performance centre.

10.30 am: The board, coach Louis van Gaal and Nerlinger address the players.
