Second round draw

FCB at home to second division Oberhausen

German women’s player of the year Inka Grings has handed Bayern and their fans a favourable draw in the second round of this season’s DFB Cup. Watched attentively by FCB President Franz Beckenbauer, the Germany international striker and DFB General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach matched Munich with Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in Saturday evening’s draw.

“The main thing you want as a player is a home tie, so we can definitely be very pleased,” Bayern vice-captain Philipp Lahm said in a first reaction, adding a personal “thank-you” to Grings. General manager Uli Hoeneß will also have been satisfied with the fixture, as he had earlier wished for “a home game against easy opposition.” The tie will be played on 22 or 23 September at the Allianz Arena.

The clubs have met three times in the history of the cup, most recently eleven years ago in 1998-9, when Bayern won 3-1. The two previous clashes in 1973 and 1974 also saw a Munich team featuring the likes of Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller & Co progress to the next round.

The DFB will finalise the second round fixture schedule in the next few days.
