The Allianz Arena crowd knew something was afoot when the players emerged to warm up: Jörg Butt came out first, waving to the south terrace faithful, followed by Michael Rensing, dribbling a ball across the field. The inkling became reality when announcer Stephan Lehmann read out the teams. “In goal, number 22: Jörg - Butt.” Rensing was among the subs.

For the fourth match of the league season, Louis van Gaal made a change in goal. Rensing, the keeper for the four competitive matches before Saturday, was replaced by Butt, who is officially the new number one for the time being. “Jörg will play the next game too,” coach van Gaal confirmed after the 3-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg. Butt had made a vital contribution to his club’s first league victory of the campaign.
