A vital first win and a superb debut from Arjen Robben, culminating in the new arrival’s second goal to seal a 3-0 victory over Wolfsburg, had FCB general manager Uli Hoeneß and his neighbours high in the stands, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and club vice-president Dr. Fritz Scherer, on their feet and applauding. After the final whistle, the chairman was in upbeat mood: “The Bundesliga campaign finally started for us today. We’ll really go for it now.”
The country’s most successful club finally harvested three points in the fourth fixture of the season. Lining up in a 4-3-3 formation for the first time, with fit-again Franck Ribéry and new signing Robben as super subs, FCB showed “our true face,” keeper Jörg Butt stated. “For our opponents, we won’t be as easy to beat any more as we were in our first three games,” offered Rummenigge.
