Bayern take first step towards last sixteen

Tel Aviv literally means “Hill of spring”. Appropriately, the green shoots of Bayern’s ambition to reach the Champions League last sixteen poked their heads above ground in Israel’s second city on Tuesday. “We’ve laid the foundation for reaching the Round of 16,” Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the team and guests at the post-match banquet following the 3-0 victory over Maccabi Haifa. “We’ve made a good start.”

The board of directors, coaching staff, players and sponsors raised a glass to the club’s seventh Champions League opening day win in a row, and top spot in this season’s Group A. “We can be very satisfied. It’s an outstanding result which puts us in an outstanding position,” said Uli Hoeneß, reflecting on the 1-1 draw between Juventus and Girondins Bordeaux in the parallel fixture. “It’s exactly what we were hoping for,” Rummenigge commented.
