The venerable Grünwalder Strasse stadium staged a third division fixture with a difference on Friday evening. Bayern star Luca Toni chose the meeting between FCB II and Jahn Regensburg to make a comeback from a three-month injury lay-off with Achilles tendon problems – and duly added a touch of glamour to proceedings at the Munich giants’ erstwhile home ground.
The list of special visitors up in the stands included general manager Uli Hoeneß, director of sport Christian Nerlinger, both assistant coaches Andries Jonker and Hermann Gerland, and fitness coach Thomas Wilhelmi, all watching the reserve game because of Toni. The player himself was obliged to procure 20 tickets for Italian friends keen to see the match. His partner Marta also took her seat five minutes before kick-off, joining an unusually large crowd of 2,900. Many – including the 30 media representatives – were certainly only there because of Toni.
