Van Gaal set to field full-strength line-up

Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben are available to play for Bayern against Juventus in the Champions League. Neither man took part in Monday’s squad training session, but the pair returned for Bayern’s final pre-match workout on Tuesday and will feature in coach Louis van Gaal’s matchday squad for the showdown at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening (Live in English from 8.30 pm on Web Radio).

As a result, Van Gaal is in a position to field his strongest-available team for the meeting with the Italian giants. Mark van Bommel (rehab training after surgery) and Martin Demichelis (ankle ligaments) are the only players still sidelined by injury. The Bayern boss will again be obliged to consign a few members of his 26-man squad to the stands.

Luca Toni will be among their number. The striker, who has twice gained match practice in the third division with the reserve team as he continues his comeback from an Achilles injury, will not be named to face Juventus, Van Gaal announced. “A player has to be 100 percent fit – and Toni isn’t. Another reason is that I have four other strikers.”

The Munich supremo declined to reveal any of his pre-match tactical thinking for Wednesday’s clash. “I’ll pick a formation which gives us the best chance of imposing our authority on the match,” he stated. In Saturday’s meeting with Hamburg, Van Gaal opted for a three-man back line for the first half, before reverting to a 4-3-3 formation for the second period.
