On Thursday, Arjen Robben had high hopes of a comeback in Bayern’s weekend Bundesliga meeting with Freiburg, but in the event, the FCB party departed for the south-west on Friday lunchtime without the Dutch winger. The decision to omit Robben was taken after the player broke off the morning pre-match training session as a precaution.
The Netherlands star will report for treatment in Munich over the weekend, with the aim of rejoining the squad for Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Bordeaux. Louis van Gaal had earlier been confident of including his fellow countryman in the party for Freiburg, most likely as a substitute, after the player made a faster than expected recovery from a knee operation just two weeks ago.
Demichelis to stay in Munich
Otherwise, Mark van Bommel returns to the matchday squad for the first time in the nine-and-a-half weeks since undergoing surgery on his foot, while Luca Toni is set for a maiden Bundesliga squad appearance of the season. Both are candidates to start the match in Freiburg, Van Gaal reported on Thursday.
By contrast, the coach has opted not to call on Martin Demichelis this weekend. The Argentine stopper returned from World Cup qualifying duty in Uruguay on Friday in a state of some exhaustion, and will use the weekend to recover. Andreas Görlitz steps in for his first matchday squad appearance of term.
