Daniel van Buyten’s late goal to beat Eintracht Frankfurt means Bayern have made up ground in the Bundesliga and go into Wednesday’s DFB Cup Round of 16 clash against the same opponents with the psychological edge. After falling behind against the run of play, FCB “showed great character,” according to captain Mark van Bommel. “We were utterly determined to win,” said match-winner Van Buyten.
Reaction to Bayern v Eintracht Frankfurt
Louis van Gaal: “I don’t know if you should call it a lucky win when you’ve created 14 chances. Frankfurt scored with their first chance, but we showed mental strength to come from behind. We made our own luck. We played well in the first half, but we didn’t take our chances. However, it’s a good sign when you’re making chances against opponents who pull everyone back. We won it at the end, and I think it was fully deserved.“
Mark van Bommel: “We had five or six very good chances in the first half, and we had to be putting those away. It would have made it a whole lot easier for us. But we fell behind, and that’s when we needed to show great character. We responded with total conviction.“
