Wednesday’s visitors Maccabi Haifa are Bayern’s second-to-last opponents in this year’s Champions League group stage. However, results up to now mean Munich’s fate in terms of progressing to the knockout stage is no longer in their own hands. For that reason, everyone associated with the club will be following events in the parallel fixture in Bordeaux with exceptionally keen interest.
In the other Group A fixture in midweek, leaders Girondins Bordeaux meet second-placed Juventus. Provided the men from Turin fail to win, Bayern can earn themselves a do-or-die showdown for second place in the section when they visit northern Italy on the last matchday (see box). However, Juve go into the meeting with the French champions as favourites, as Girondins have gone badly off the boil of late.
On Saturday, coach Laurent Blanc’s men lost for the second time in a row in the French league and were knocked off top spot. Girondins’ 1-0 defeat to Valenciennes was their first reverse at home for more than two years (since October 2007), ending a run of 39 games undefeated at the Chaban Delmas stadium.
