Bayern yet again dominated a match from start to finish and enjoyed easily the better of the chances, but yet again, it wasn’t to be for the men in red as Saturday’s opponents Schalke headed home for Gelsenkirchen with a lucky point. “We can’t be satisfied with the result, but compared to the Bordeaux game in midweek, the match as such was a great deal better," general manager Uli Hoeneß reflected after the final whistle.
Reaction to Bayern v Schalke:
Louis van Gaal: “Our goal was to beat Schalke, but we’ve unfortunately not managed that. We didn’t play well for the first ten minutes, but we dominated the game after that. We had chances, but we kept coming up inches short. That has to improve. I’m really frustrated about not scoring in the second half, because we’d have deserved a goal.“
Uli Hoeneß: “Basically, we can never be satisfied with failure to win at home. You could sense the pressure on the players. I didn’t think we were particularly good at the start, but it improved after we scored – and that’s exactly when we conceded the goal. I’m fairly certain that if we’d gone in at half-time 1-0 up, we’d have won the game. On top of everything, we’re having no luck at all at the moment. Schalke hacked two shots off the line in the second half. We can’t be satisfied with the result, but compared to the Bordeaux game in midweek, the match as such was a great deal better.“
Felix Magath (Schalke coach): “I’m extremely pleased with the result. In fact, I’m satisfied with our overall performance. We’ve performed well given what’s available to us. I’m a little dismayed that we took fright after a good opening and stopped trying to get forward. We slowly but surely surrendered the initiative and were too passive. We came under pressure in the second half, but we defended well and kept their chances to a minimum, so the draw is ultimately deserved.“
Joel Matip (Schalke goalscorer): “It’s been a terrific experience, here at the stadium with all these people. The fans were great, just terrific. I had an inkling I might get asked to play, but it was still a surprise when it came. I’m delighted the coach decided to give me a chance. He told me to give it my best shot and do my job.“
