Bayern versus Schalke

Van Bommel: We should grind out a win

The players used Thursday’s day off to move on mentally from the Champions League defeat to Bordeaux – and the Bayern stars had little time for regrets in any case, as Bundesliga rivals Schalke are due at the Allianz Arena on Saturday (Live in English from 3.15 pm CET on Web Radio). Mark van Bommel is delighted at the prospect of another crunch fixture so soon after the midweek reverse: “We can take revenge.”

“It's our chance to overtake Schalke, and that’s our target,” Louis van Gaal thundered, “we have to win.” Victory over the side lying fourth in the table appears crucial to Bayern’s title ambitions, especially as the first game after the break for internationals is also at home, against another title aspirant in the shape of current leaders Bayer Leverkusen. “We’ll get stuck in right from the start, and I’m convinced that’ll get the crowd right behind us,” Van Bommel announced, urging the team to go back to the basics: “It all starts with passion and fighting spirit.”
