Bayern have been handed a tough but manageable task in this season’s Champions League first knockout round after Germany’s most successful club were paired with Serie A outfit Fiorentina in the draw for the last sixteen.
The ceremony, held at UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, from midday on Friday, featured seven former winners of Europe's elite club competition, with a total of three teams each from England, Italy and Spain, two apiece from Germany and France, and one each from Russia, Portugal and Greece.
Fiorentina and Bayern are well-acquainted after meeting in the group stages last season. The men from Munich won 3-0 at home before battling to a 1-1 draw in Florence. This season, Fiorentina won Group E with a string of impressive displays to leave Olympique Lyon, Liverpool and Debrecen trailing in their wake.
In the last sixteen tie, Bayern are at home in the first leg, sure to be played in front of a capacity 66,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena, on Wednesday 17 February 2010. The decisive return at the Estadio Artemio Franchi in Florence is on Tuesday 9 March. This year’s final takes place at the Estadio Bernabeu in Madrid on 22 May 2010.
