Robben: We could have scored ten

“I’m very happy coach,” Louis van Gaal declared after watching his Bayern side overcome Bremen 3-2 to recover top spot in the Bundesliga. The Dutchman only had one major area of complaint: “It’s unbelievable we’ve only won 3-2. We should have won by a lot more.” Arjen Robben, scorer of the 78th-minute winner, completely agreed: “We might have scored ten today.”

An eighth consecutive win in all competitions has left the FCB camp in confident mood as they duel with Leverkusen for the lead. “If we continue playing like that week after week, the pressure will be irresistible,” commented Michael Rensing, “we’re all determined to bring the championship shield back to Munich.”

Reaction to Bremen v Bayern:

Louis van Gaal: “I’m very happy coach today. Werder Bremen are a team who take risks, and we took advantage of that on this occasion. I was pleased we were so keen to attack, but unfortunately, we failed to make the most of our chances. It’s unbelievable we’ve only won 3-2. We should have won by a lot more. We’ve played well but missed far too many chances, which is a shame. It meant the bench was a stressful place right to the end. But it’s never easy against Werder Bremen.”

Arjen Robben: “We’re heading in the right direction and playing good football. We might have scored ten today. We had so many chances but didn’t make the most of them, myself included. I could even have overtaken [the league’s leading scorer] Kießling today. Sometimes the easy ones just won’t go in – and the difficult ones do.”
