Despite Louis van Gaal awarding his men Tuesday and Wednesday off to recharge their batteries, the Säbener Strasse training facility was a busy place in midweek. No fewer than five members of the senior squad dropped by club headquarters to work on their fitness.
The most determined of them all was Daniel van Buyten. The Belgian defender has been sidelined with a torn calf muscle, but resumed jogging and running on Wednesday in an individual session supervised by fitness and sports rehab coach Thomas Wilhelmi. “It was OK as a way to restart,” Van Buyten commented afterwards, “But we’ll have to wait and see whether I’ll be fit in time for the Hamburg match.”
Olic on the move
The men from the north are due at the Allianz Arena on Sunday evening. Despite his return to the practice ground, ex-Hamburg star Van Buyten remains doubtful for the clash with his former club. The 32-year-old, who played no part in the weekend draw with Nürnberg, will now gradually increase his training workload across the course of the week.
Ivica Olic also broke sweat on Wednesday. The Croat joined assistant coach Hermann Gerland for a practice session on the main grass training pitch, where the focus was on shooting at goal. “I missed training on Monday with a minor back injury, so I was absolutely determined to do something today,” the striker explained to fcbayern.de.
Micho jogging, Gomez balancing
Martin Demichelis spent half-an-hour jogging and running, joining the Van Buyten/Wilhelmi session for a time before reporting to head physio Fredi Binder for a massage. Mario Gomez opted to come in for an extra session on his day off too. The club’s leading scorer spent his time in the performance centre working out on the weights, and in a series of balancing exercises.
Last but not least, Arjen Robben also showed up for a lengthy massage. On Thursday, the entire squad is due back at the training ground, ready to begin preparations for the Hamburg clash.
