Thomas Müller is poised to make his senior international debut for Germany. Head coach Joachim Löw has named the Bayern shooting star in a 26-strong squad for the friendly meeting with Argentina at the Allianz Arena in Munich next Wednesday.
“There was a sense it might be coming soon, but I’m obviously thrilled,” Müller told FCB.tv. It fell to team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger to inform the youngster of his call-up. “He might have got the news on his mobile, but I haven’t looked at mine yet,” Müller revealed after morning training at Bayern.
“I’m delighted for him. He’s earned this call-up with consistently good displays for us, and I hope it goes just as well for him with the national team,” Christian Nerlinger told fcbayern.de. “The key thing for me is that the players remain aware that the club is the foundation for everything they do, and we’re aiming high here. But in Thomas’s case I have no concerns,” the director of sport continued.
“The most important thing is a good career with Bayern. I’ve not made a single international appearance yet, so it’s muted pride for now,” responded Müller, who nevertheless hopes for his maiden outing on Wednesday: “Facing Argentina in Munich would be a dream come true. But I’m making no demands and expecting nothing. I’ll join up with the squad and try and fit in as well as I can.”
Demichelis set for ‘home’ appearance
Mario Gomez, Miroslav Klose, Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger have also been called into Löw’s squad, as has Toni Kroos. The Bayern midfielder, out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen for the rest of this season, also makes his debut in the senior Germany squad, although he and Müller both attended a fitness testing session with the national team in January.
“Both have come to the fore in recent months with good performances in the Bundesliga, so they’ve earned a chance,” commented Löw. Müller was called up to a planned fixture against Cote d’Ivoire last autumn, but the game was cancelled as a mark of respect following Robert Enke’s tragic death.
The midweek friendly also features another FCB star, but in Argentina colours. Defender Martin Demichelis is in the Albicileste squad, and is thoroughly looking forward to the head-to-head against his club-mates. “I’m playing for the away team on this occasion, but it’s still a home game for me personally,” Micho declared.
