Van Buyten ruled out of Nuremberg trip

Daniel van Buyten and Bayern suffered a setback on Wednesday night when the Belgian international limped out of the 2-1 Champions League Round of 16 first leg victory over Fiorentina at half-time with a calf injury. The centre-half will be sidelined for an indeterminate period.

“He definitely won’t play against Nürnberg, and may not be fit in time for the Hamburg fixture a week later,“ coach Louis van Gaal announced during the post-match news conference. However, the Bayern boss remains hopeful that his towering centre-back may recover in time for the top-of-the-table meeting with Hamburg at the Allianz Arena on 28 February: “Fortunately, we don’t have two games a week for a spell now.”

Van Buyten failed to emerge for the second half on Wednesday, Van Gaal handing 19-year-old Diego Contento his Champions League debut instead. Holger Badstuber moved inside to his favoured centre-half position, with FCB youth product Contento slotting in at left-back.
