FC Köln are the only team to play Bayern twice this term and not lose, after a goalless stalemate in Munich last autumn and Saturday’s 1-1 draw in Cologne. “That’s the second time we’ve failed to beat them,” lamented Bastian Schweinsteiger, scorer of Bayern’s equaliser. Keeper Jörg Butt accepted responsibility for Lukas Podolski’s opening goal: “The ball’s wobbled, but I’ve got to save it.”
Reaction to Köln v Bayern:
Christian Nerlinger: “I said before the season started that it would be tough. It’ll be a long and hard fight for the title, with Schalke, who are showing they intend to stick around, and with Leverkusen, who are very likely to go back to the top tomorrow. It was, is and will remain tense.”
Louis van Gaal: “For the first fifteen minutes, we played the way we planned beforehand. But after that, we tried to go through the middle far too often, and that wasn’t clever, because that’s where all the Köln players were. We were better after half-time because we got the ball wide, but we failed to score the second goal. I believe you have to earn your luck, and for thirty minutes in the first half, that’s what we failed to do."
