United on song ahead of crucial week

Manchester United warmed up in the best possible style for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Munich by returning to the top of the English Premier League with a 4-0 win away to Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium. Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Chelsea had temporarily taken over top spot with a 7-1 thrashing of Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. The west London outfit visit Old Trafford next week.

United face just as serious a test of their credentials as Bayern in the coming weeks, but in contrast to their midweek Champions League opponents, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are riding a wave of confidence after winning their last six matches.

“It was an emphatic win in the circumstances with Chelsea winning earlier in the day,” Ferguson enthused after the Bolton clash, although the score failed accurately to reflect the pattern of the match, as the Trotters put up stiff resistance until 20 minutes from time. “You’ve got to deal with the aerial balls all day and it required some fantastic defending. I don’t know how many times Nemanja Vidic headed that ball clear but it must have been in the thousands! You get a sore head just watching it,” Ferguson declared.
