Reaction to the cup semi-final

Van Gaal: I’m proud of my players

Bayern are through to the DFB Cup final, thanks to a strong team performance full of energy and running, and one sublime moment of skill from Arjen Robben. Louis van Gaal was full of praise for the man who netted the only goal of the night to see off Schalke 04 on their home patch. “Robben is unbelievable. Producing a goal like that in the blink of an eye is true class,” the coach enthused.

Reaction to Schalke v Bayern:

Louis van Gaal: “We dominated the game, both in terms of stamina and the football we played. There was only a quarter of the game, at the start of the second half, when Schalke were better. We controlled the game in the first half and in extra-time. It was a big performance and I’m very proud of my players. Robben is unbelievable. Producing a goal like that in the blink of an eye is true class.”

Bastian Schweinsteiger: “It’s extremely hard trying to play our decent brand of football on a surface like that. We were the only team trying to play any football. We’re delighted about making it to the final, because it’s a reward for the entire Bayern staff, who’ll be coming with us to Berlin.”

Philipp Lahm: “We were the better team over the 120 minutes. We had the better chances, and more of them too. Overall, it was a good display. It was a cup semi-final so of course players are going to get stuck in. We’ve given a very good account of ourselves tonight.”
