Van Gaal: We’re in with a chance

Bayern staged a courageous comeback from Wayne Rooney’s early opener to seize the upper hand in the Champions League last eight tie against Manchester United, Ivica Olic netting with the last kick to earn a slightly fortunate but ultimately merited 2-1 win. “I think it was fully deserved,” Louis van Gaal said afterwards. The Bayern coach now thinks his men can make the semi-finals: “I do believe we’re in with a chance.”

Reaction to Bayern v Manchester United:

Louis van Gaal: “I think it was fully deserved. We were on top, even in the first half. We shouldn’t be conceding goals in the first minute, but it’s happened and it was a shock. We needed ten minutes to get ourselves straight mentally. Manchester have scored here in Munich, so 1-0 is enough for them. But we’ve always scored at least once away from home up to now, so that’s why I do believe we’re in with a chance.”

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “We’ve had the good fortune to score the winning goal in the final seconds. That made it just perfect. We reacted brilliantly in the second half, we played terrific football and put up a terrific fight. You’ve got to praise the team for coming from behind like that. We really do have a small chance of making the semi-finals now. Conceding a goal in the first minute didn’t make it easy. It was something of a shock. It’ll be a hard-fought game in Manchester. Winning today was vital for our confidence.”
