‘A very good result’

Van Gaal pleased with rousing team display

The FCB camp was uniformly pleased with a clean sheet and a win at home to Olympique Lyon in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg. “It's a very good result,” stated chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Coach Louis van Gaal was pleased both with the outcome and his team’s rousing display. “I’m very satisfied. I think we’ve again showed the whole of Europe just how strong we are.”

Reaction to Bayern v Olympique Lyon:

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “Our target was to win, if possible without conceding a goal, and we’ve achieved it. We’ll go to Lyon next Tuesday with high hopes. We were fantastic in the second half, that was European football at its best. It's a very good result, our best result in the knockout stages. I think we’re capable of scoring in Lyon, and that would mean they’d have to score three. Robben is a terrific player. We can be delighted he’s ours.”

Louis van Gaal: “One-nil is an extremely good result and I’m very satisfied. I think we’ve again showed the whole of Europe just how strong we are. Even with ten men, we dominated the game and created more chances. Overall, we had a lot of chances but we’ve scored just the one. After Ribéry saw a red card, I didn’t think we’d win 1-0, although I don’t think it was a red card offence. I think the ref may have gone for red because Ribéry stayed on Lisandro’s foot for a long time, although he wasn’t applying any force. I hope he’ll only be suspended for one match.”
