The final whistle had been blown in Berlin and preparations for the presentation of the championship trophy were underway on the pitch of the Olympic Stadium when Louis van Gaal uttered a resounding cheer. He had just heard the final score from Bremen, where Werder had drawn 1:1 with Hamburg. Now it was official – Bayern was the top team of the 2009-10 season in terms of goalscoring, too.
“We have the best defence, along with Schalke, and the best attack, and of course we have the most points as well,” enthused the first Dutch coach to win the Bundesliga (“I’m proud of that”). Chairman Uli Hoeness expressed his delight after Bayern had extended its record number of championship titles to 22: “Team and coach have done a fantastic job.”
