Tens of thousands of fans took to the streets of Munich on Sunday to hail the new German champions Bayern Munich. The motorcade from the club headquarters to the packed Marienplatz was greeted by 100,000 fans festooned in red and white lining the streets, and shortly after 4 pm – an hour late – coach Louis van Gaal and the team led by captain Mark van Bommel, clad in lederhosen, hoisted the championship trophy aloft for the fans from the balcony of the town hall.
“We are not only the champions of Munich, but in Gelsenkirchen, Bremen and Hamburg,” said a euphoric Van Gaal. “We are the best team in Germany and perhaps in Europe,” he added in hope of a Champions League triumph on May 22 against Internazionale in Madrid. “ The Dutchman then led Munich mayor Christian Ude in a spontaneous dance on the balcony.
