National team coach Joachim Löw has named seven Bayern players in his preliminary World Cup squad, among them Holger Badstuber, whose international experience has up to now been limited to Germany’s Under-21 side. On Thursday fcbayern.de spoke with the World Cup hopefuls as well as club officials to get reaction to Löw’s selection of a large group from the champions-elect for the national squad.
Reaction to the preliminary squad
Christian Nerlinger: “I believe that Holger and Thomas have earned the right to be there. Thomas has absolutely shown that he’s a very calm player, that he’s got a tremendous nose for opportunities, and that he’s always dangerous in front of goal. And Holger has also played extremely well in the unaccustomed role of full-back – he’s good one to one, strong in the air and passes the ball well. That’s why I think both of them would strengthen the national team. I have confidence in the two of them on the basis of what they have achieved here.”
Hermann Gerland: “I had expected Thomas to be part of the squad. As far as Jörg is concerned, obviously no-one anticipated that Adler would drop out. And I was surprised about Holger. But of course I’m delighted for him and all the others that have been called up. The whole youth set-up at Bayern can be very proud.”
