It weights 11 kilos, has a diameter of 53 centimetres and the German Football Association sets a material value of €25,000 on it. We’re talking about the championship shield, popularly known as the “salad bowl”. Year after year, this trophy is the object of desire of 18 Bundesliga teams, but no club has laid hands on it as often as Bayern. “We have always said that the German championship is the most important title for us, because it is the most even-handed competition,” said director of sport Christian Nerlinger ahead of Bayern’s final Bundesliga match of the season against Hertha in Berlin (Live in English from 3.15 pm CET on Saturday on FCB.tv web radio). “That’s why it’s fantastic for everyone that we will receive the trophy on Saturday.” After last weekend’s fixtures Bayern are in practical terms already champions, with a lead of three points and 17 goals over Schalke, and captain Mark van Bommel will be presented with the championship trophy on Saturday.
