Bayern exert strong influence in South Africa

Munich is some 9,000 kilometres removed from the city of Durban on the east coast of South Africa, but there was a distinctly Bavarian flavour to events at Moses Mabhida Stadium last Tuesday – thanks to Arjen Robben, who cut inside from the right wing and blasted home with his left peg, exactly as he did in club colours so often last term. Robben’s goal merely served to underline Bayern’s impact and influence on this World Cup.

At the end of the Round of 16, no club has more players still in contention for the trophy as the double winners from Munich. Germany’s most successful club will have ten players on duty for three national teams in the quarter-finals, and that's not including Toni Kroos and Edson Braafheid, who aer technically still out on loan.
