FCB youth Duhnke fires double hat-trick

Werner Kern has headed the Bayern youth section for 12 years, but even he has never heard of a player scoring six goals in a junior Bundesliga match. FCB U-17 striker Marius Duhke managed the feat in a derby against bitter foes 1860 Munich, netting his double hat-trick in an amazing spell between the fifth and 40th minutes of the first half. “It's just unbelievable,” Kern declared on Tuesday.

Interviewed by, the potent goalscorer himself admitted his exploits had “not yet really sunk in.” The 16-year-old, who arrived at the Säbener Strasse from Schweinfurt two years ago and is a resident boarder at the Bayern academy, talked about Sunday’s astonishing game.

Interview: Marius Duhnke Marius, what happened at school the day after your double hat-trick? Had your fellow students heard about it?
Duhnke: “I’m at the Theodolinden grammar school in an elite sports class with lots of footballers, so yes, they’d heard about it. Most of my class-mates were at the game and congratulated me there, although they could hardly believe it.“ Have you realised the enormity of what you achieved?
Duhnke: “Not really, and it’s going to be a slow process. It was hard getting to sleep that evening. Six goals in a half, and in the derby too – it was an amazing feeling, but hard to get your mind around.“ Have you ever scored six goals in a game before?
Duhnke: “I honestly don’t know. Maybe in the U-9 or U-11, but I really can’t remember.“ What do you recall of the match?
Duhnke: “The first goal came early doors from a good move. It was a relief, as the goals had dried up for me recently. I scored the second from a defensive error, and pretty much every shot went in after that. I could hardly believe my luck after the fourth, and then I scored the fifth and sixth. It was just awesome.“ It's hard to credit, but you’d gone ten games without scoring before Sunday.
Duhnke: “It's true. I scored 11 before Christmas, but only once this year.“ Is the double hat-trick any consolation for missing out on the play-offs for the national championship?
Duhnke: “Not at all. I’d rather the goals had come in a variety of games. Then we might have made the play-offs.“ What’s the next step for you?
Duhnke: “I’m joining the U-19 squad in the summer, where I’ll simply do my best. Naturally, my long-term goal is to become a professional footballer.“ At Bayern?
Duhnke: “That would obviously be a dream come true.“
