France star in Munich for groin surgery

Star winger Franck Ribéry will have surgery on his groin in Munich this Friday. Following France’s early exit from the World Cup and the squad’s return home on Thursday, the 27-year-old boarded a private jet chartered by the club and returned to the Bavarian capital for the operation.

The routine procedure was agreed upon by Ribéry and Bayern chief medical officer Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt at the end of last season. The player is suffering from so-called sportsman's groin, an incipient hernia which also prompted FCB youngster Mehmet Ekici to undergo surgery a few weeks ago.

Ribéry will spend the next few days recuperating in hospital before taking his official summer vacation for the period specified by the club. The player is expected to begin pre-season training under Louis van Gaal at Bayern on schedule.
