FCB open title defence against Wolfsburg

The official 2010-11 Bundesliga restart match at the Allianz Arena on 20 August sees champions Bayern take on 2009 league winners VfL Wolfsburg. The clash between Germany’s top teams of the last two seasons was revealed by the German Football League (DFL) on Monday at the announcement of the fixture list for the new campaign.

“The opening Bundesliga match between the current and former champions boasts a certain tradition since last season," commented FCB chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “The game against VfL Wolfsburg is a tremendous opening fixture, for the league as a whole, and for Bayern and our fans. As champions, we’ll obviously want to start the season on a positive note, which means beating Wolfsburg."

Van Gaal: Wolves are title candidates

“Wolfsburg are one of the teams who could be in the running for the title,” FCB coach Louis van Gaal declared, warning of the threat posed by the Wolves under new boss Steve McLaren. “They don’t have very many players at the World Cup, which is not to Bayern’s advantage,” Van Gaal continued. Eleven Munich men are still involved in South Africa and will not resume training at the club until two and a half weeks before the opening fixture.

For the second season in succession, Bayern’s early fixtures have a tricky feel to them. After travelling to promoted Kaiserslautern on Matchday 2, Van Gaal’s men are at home twice in a row, first in a re-run of the DFB Cup final against Werder Bremen, and then against FC Köln. Bayern travel to Hoffenheim a week after that.

Finale against Stuttgart

“We are at home on successive matchdays right at the start of the season, because the Munich city council and the local security authorities asked the DFL to schedule an away match for our team on Matchday 21, from 4-6 February 2011. This is because of a global security conference taking place in Munich over the first weekend in February 2011,” Rummenigge explained.

The all-Bavaria derby against FC Nürnberg will take place on the weekend of 12-14 November. The first league meeting with Bundesliga runners-up Schalke 04, who face Bayern in pre-season on 7 August in the reintroduced Supercup, is on the weekend of 3-5 December at the Schalke Arena. Bayern are at home on the 34th and last matchday, set for 14 May 2011, when south German rivals VfB Stuttgart visit the Allianz Arena.
